In our decades of being in the bed, and waterbed business, we have learned a thing or two about how the general population holds many misconceptions, and perpetuates as many myths about waterbeds. Perpetuated by the media, and Hollywood, (think Edward scissorhands), waterbeds have taken a beating in the public eye, often as the butt of cheap jokes. But this we know to be true; Everyone who we meet who has, or has ever had a waterbed speaks fondly about them. Those who make ignorant comments are those who have never slept on one. So here we will try (once again) to dispel a few of these myths.

1)     Will my waterbed fall through the floor?  NO! This just doesn’t happen. An adult walking across a floor causes more stress! The average weight per square foot (psf) for a properly filled hardside bed is 42 lbs. Many other things in your home weigh much more psf; like a fully stocked refrigerator, a piano, a fish tank, etc. We once had a waterbed demo in our showroom supported entirely by paper cups.

    2)     Will I get seasick? This is our favorite. Nobody has ever gotten seasick from being on a waterbed. Enough said.

3)     Can a waterbed burst? No. Properly filled water mattresses are not under pressure. They are under about as much stress as a glass of water. While we don’t recommend it, a waterbed can take a lot of abuse. Just use a good mattress pad, and don’t bring any sharp objects to bed. (as if!)

    4)     What is the life expectancy of a waterbed? Most have a 10-15 year warranty, but some of our customers have 20+ year old waterbeds. There are no springs to sag or wear out. It will feel the same in 20 years as it does today.

5)     Why add conditioner?  When water is kept warm, dark, and stagnant, (like inside a filled water mattress), microbes that exist normally in tap water tend to organize and become organic. The water then takes on an unpleasant  “low tide” odor. These organisms subsequently attack and harden the vinyl in the interior of the mattress. This is easily remedied by adding conditioner annually to the water.

    6)     Why a waterbed?  Our customers answer this question the best. Those who sleep nightly on a waterbed usually have trouble sleeping when they go on vacation, or stay in hotels. The truth is, they’re accustomed to sleeping on a surface that has no pressure points. These are the parts of your body that come most directly in contact with the sleeping surface (hips, buttocks, shoulders, etc). An innerspring mattress exerts as much pressure on you as you do it. This interrupts your blood circulation, and causes tossing and turning, thus preventing a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep. While the warm, conforming surface of a water mattress supports a much wider area of your body, even the lower back, cradling you in comfort, without pressure points. Did it ever occur to you that life (even yours) starts in a waterbed? We’ve all already been there, so come on back and re-experience what you have been missing!
